Stumble It!The Intuitive Diet

Filed under: Food — Eric Ptak @ 1:30 am

Now, here’s an idea for dieting for you: Intuitive Eating. And just what is it? Basically, you eat what you want, when you want, and only enough to make you satisfied – not full. It is an interesting concept, being in tune with your body and only eating what you need to eat. I actually like the idea.

It sprung out of some studies that were done, in which it was discovered that people are on roller coasters with respect to weight loss. It’s a terrible cycle to be in. Radical weight fluctuations, starving , deprivation of nutrients, then binging, it sucks. This seeks to address that. From their website, we have that

the concept of intuitive eating suggests that all individuals have within themselves a natural mechanism that if allowed to function will ensure good nutrition at a healthy weight. As individuals get in touch with this “inner guide” or access their “inner wisdom” they will be more in tune with their body’s physical needs and will eat in a way that supports health, thinness, and nutrition; while at the same time avoiding overeating, obsessive food consumption, harmful dieting, or mindless nibbling.

However, the way to fight cravings and addictive eating is kind of spooky, at least the way Dr. Steven Hawks described them. Let’s say I really like French crullers. I would have hundreds of them on hand, and eat them only when I was hungry for them. After a while, the theory goes, I will not crave them any more, and will no longer be addicted to eating them. It’s a little psychology, eliminating the need for them, while making them so pervasive that you do not want them at all. Now this is a nice idea, except I have no idea where I would put 6 dozen crullers. Especially after they go stale and need to be tossed out.

It is a good idea, though, and really, it is how I eat. I don’t eat a lot of crap, and eat what I feel like. I go shopping once weekly for fresh fruits and veggies, and different supplies that I need. I have a freezer full of meats, and I make all my food from scratch, except for bread, beer and coffee. And various condiments. Today, I had some coco puffs for breakfast. Some egg noodles in a stroganoff-like sauce for lunch, bits of chicken, sausage and pork (I was cooking lunches for the week) and a baked sweet potato with butter and cinnamon for dinner. I’m full, and don’t think I will eat until tomorrow.

I guess that I am an intuitive eater.
