Stumble It!What is Single-Payer?

This is a simple, and rather cogent explanation of single-payer healthcare. After watching it, check out the FAQs.

I know from personal experience that one of the main causes of mortgage delinquencies and foreclosures are medical costs. People either pay for their doctor and for medication or they pay their mortgage, because most people live from paycheck to paycheck. They can’t afford to set some money aside for potential health emergencies. Even if they set aside some savings, even that doesn’t last forever. I’ve talked with so many people who lost their jobs because of a medical condition, went through all their savings, and faced foreclosure because they can’t afford the house they have lived in for 15 years.

People even fall behind because of family members who fall ill. I spoke with a woman this week who forgot to pay her mortgage because she was halfway across the country caring for her mother who was incapacitated by a stroke. While she was trying to care for her mother (who had obnoxious medical bills because of the severity of the stroke) she lost her mother. Why? Her mother couldn’t afford the healthcare needed to rehabilitate properly from the stroke. All she could do was give aid and comfort and watch her mother die at the ripe old age of 57. And she almost lost her home because her mother was the firs thing on her mind.

Is that right? No. But within the healthcare system this country has, it most certainly is acceptable, or so it seems. And we’re supposed to be the most advanced country in the world.

What a joke.
