X Marks the Spot
Last Thursday, I got out of work at about 8:00 Eastern, and was waiting for the bus. Once in a while, I see something really cool, like this peculiar cloud formation.
It is notoriously difficult to get depth in a heavily cloud-laden sky, especially with a cheap digital camera. Still, I think the picture turned out quite well. There was a break in the lower cloud cover, and through it you could see the contrails left by two aircraft that went in different directions. From my point of view, the artificial cirrus clouds created by airplane exhaust made an “X” in the sky. The formation was only visible for about two minutes before it disappeared, as the hole in the lower cloud cover closed up. In the picture, the upper left corner seems to be opening up to clear sky, but just outside of the frame was the remainder of the lower cloud cover. The wind was blowing from left to right, and you can see wisps of the lower clouds that were covering up the “X”. I was just happy to be able to grab my camera out quickly enough to get the image, before it disappeared for posterity.
