Stumble It!The Israel Problem

Filed under: Politics — Eric Ptak @ 1:23 am

The problem right now is Israel vs Hamas, and Israel vs Hezbollah. Granted these are real problems, and they have to be addressed. They are what they are, and Israel had to react and protect themselves. I’m not saying that what Israel did was right or wrong, I’m not saying that what Hamas and Hezbollah did was right or wrong. Those are symptoms of the greater problem.

Let me draw an analogy: you have a cold. It’s a nasty one, and you have draining sinuses and a horrific cough. Certainly, you have to medicate your sinuses and your cough so that you can make it through your day, but that does not cure the real problem: the fact that you have a cold. So, in addition to taking an antihistamine and a cough suppressant and whatever else to address the symptoms that bother you most at that particular moment, you still have to address the real problem. You have to cure the cold.

Hezbollah and Hamas are symptoms. They are the cough and the sniffles that you have to medicate, but addressing them does not address the real problem; taking action against them does not cure the disease. Certainly, Israel has the right to do what they are doing, to stop the cough, but stopping the cough does not cure the cold.

The problems that exist today go back hundreds, if not thousands of years. We can re-hash all of history, back to Biblical times and all the angst that exists between the Ishmaelites and the Israelites, the Arabs and the Jews. We still would not get anywhere, because nothing so far in thousands of years of history has worked, period.

We could even blame the European powers for what is going on now, because of the way they drew boundaries after they relinquished their colonial holdings. They cast off these countries that are drawn, not according to any ethnic or historic relationships, but according to what was perceived as good for the European powers at the time.

You can even say that Israel is a result of 19th-century Zionists who pined for an independent Jewish state that tried under the League of Nations and succeeded under the UN in establishing a Jewish state. But it didn’t take into consideration historical and ethnic considerations at the time.

Realistically, Israel is a country that was foisted upon the Arab world, who were told this is what is going to happen, whether they agreed with it or not, and they have to deal with it. And yes, it sucks to be them, because Israel beat their ass every time they tried to change that situation. Understandably, the Arabs, and specifically, the Palestinians, are upset. Knowing that doesn’t solve the problem, however.

What needs to happen is, whether under the auspices of the UN or the Arab League or whatever, all the leaders in the Middle East need to get together and have a conference that will iron out the issues, air the dirty laundry, get to the bottom of the issues, and solve the problems that exist today.

The leaders of Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Oman, Yemen, Egypt, Sudan, Eritrea and Somalia need to get together in a conference to discuss the issues and talk about what is really going on, and solve the problems once and for all. Pull in the various religious factions while we’re at it: the Shiites, the Sunnis, the Wahhabis, the Jews, the Christians, the Druze, and so on. Pull in the various ethnicities: the Jews, the Arabs, the Kurds, the Turks, the Persians, the Syrians, etc. Get them all together at one big table at a conference, and get them to talk with each other.

Let them state their opinions. Let them state their differences. Let them state their wants. Let them enunciate their desires.

The thing is, get them talking. Everyone, all at once. Air it all out. This is a complex issue, a Gordian knot. Cutting it with a sword, while it will temporarily solve the issue, it will not be a permanent solution. While you have gotten rid of the knot, you have remaining a bunch of strands which are still interacting and still causing problems with each other.

We need to stop just treating the symptoms and treat the disease. Get everyone to the table, and let them start talking with each other, rather than rattling sabers and launching missiles and shooting bullets at each other. Create a win-win situation. Granted, everyone will win some things, and by winning some things, everyone will by the same token lose other things. But if you don’t let everyone have their say, and let everyone participate in some give and take, no one wins. Everyone loses, and all you can do is stop the cough. And hopefully the sniffles, too, while avoiding the Apocalypse.

You’ll still be drying out the sinuses, so there’s no more sneezing. But you won’t cure the cold.

Get them all together, lock them in a room, and don’t let anyone out until they all agree to and sign a treaty for the ages that will solve the problem once and for all.

Because quite frankly, I’m sick of all the shit. They need to grow up, and deal with their situation in an adult way, instead of behaving like gangs of teenagers in the slums of some overcrowded city.

They need to find a cure for the cold, and while you and I can give them advice, we can’t do it for them. They have to do it themselves.
