Hope Springs Eternal

Scientists tell us optimistic people are happier, healthier and even live longer than pessimists. But it’s hard to maintain an optimistic frame of mind in the face of daily reports of war, famine, disease and injustice. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, evidence that the world is actually better off than you’d think from reading the news – lessons in optimism, and the science of happiness.

Optimism vs Pessimism. Is the cup half-empty or is it half full? Should we be happy or should we be sad? Lately, I’ve been on the optimistic side. What with the Sabres doing so well, and M___ coming into my life, I’m finding it more entertaining to think about possibilities, and what good could happen. Fun songs like Timbuk3′s “The Future’s So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades” pop into my head.

And why not, I ask you? Why should I not be happy? Why go through life with a scowl, grumpy, disillusioned and disappointed all the time? Always complaining about how bad things are, whining and bitching about everything? It’s a sunny day, and who cares, even if it’s raining, there are still good things that can come from rain. I made love to a woman in a thunderstorm once, because it was such an incredible turn-on to be able to do so. Sure, we got soaked, but it was electrifying for both of us.

And so I am looking forward to happier times, and fun times ahead. It’s nice to be able to wear a smile for once, and not be so world-weary.
