Stumble It!Sabres Steal One from Boston

Filed under: Sports — Eric Ptak @ 12:22 am

Tonite, the Sabres beat Boston 3-2, stealing 2 points from a team that should have beat them. Boston played harder, had control of the game more often, and had more shots on goal. Nevertheless, as has happened so many times this season, someone on the Sabres steps up to get the win.

Today, it was Hecht, Briere, and Dumont. who won the game. They scored the three goals, and dominated when they were on the ice. I expect these guys to play at a high level, simply because they are three of the best players on the team, and all three were out injured for a long time simultaneously. While they were out, the rest of the team didn’t slack, and won a lot of games. So if they want to maintain their staning as three of the top players on the team, they have to pick it up, score lots of goals, and create excitement.

Really, though, the whole team is doing great. They are tied with 6 other teams for fewest games played, yet are 5th in wins and points, and 4th in win percentage. They’re tied for 2nd in power play percentage and are alone in second place in penalty killing. They win when they score first, and they win when thee other team scores first. They win when they are winning after the first period, and they win when winning after the second period. They win when they outshoot other teams, and they win when other teams outshoot them. In every team statistical category except for 5 on 5 for/against ratio, they are in the top half of the league, and in most other cases, in the top 10. This is a special team.

It kills me when people talk about trading players. The other day, I heard people on a talk radio show saying that we should trade Afinogenov. It was a Scooby moment. “Hunnnhhhh????” The guy’s on pace for a 70 point season and you want to trade him? What are you, stupid? Then there’s all the talk about getting rid of Biron. I’m sorry, but with as many games as we have to play in March, the definite possibility of going to the playoffs, and the fact that there’s only one other team (Philadelphia) with 2 goalies in the top 25 goalies in the league based on wins, I think it’d be shooting ourselves in the foot to get rid of him this season. As well as everyone is playing, I’d not want to get rid of anyone.
