Stumble It!Bad Browser

Filed under: Science and Technology — Eric Ptak @ 2:30 pm

Lately, I’ve been having problems with Netscape crashing on me. I think it’s because I’m using an older version, nad lots of websites are using lots more javascripts and flash. Jay Leno’s Garage just gives me issues, and I’ll leave it at that.

So I went to Download.com, to read about different browsers and try out a couple of them. I decided on Opera and Avant, because they had good ratings, and very few bad ones.

One thing I’m glad I did, and every time anyone is trying new software they should do this, is I created a restore point. This is key, because if something happens during the install or the running of a new program and Winblows is corrupted it can be fixed. What I mean, is you can use the restore point to go back in time so to speak, to before the install. It’s the smartest thing that Microsoft ever did.

So I installed Opera, and really didn’t have any problems, beyond installing Flash again, and all that ancillary crap. It’s alright as far as browsers go. It does the trick and doesn’t crash like Netscape wants to lately.

Then I installed the Avant browser.

What a mistake.

The first time I ran it, my computer froze. The second time I ran it, my computer froze. I rebooted and saw that it had put an icon at the top of my start menu, so I tried clicking on it to get rid of it. My computer froze. I rebooted, and tried going online and I couldn’t for the life of me get a connection. I rebooted a couple of times, thinking that maybe it was something in the startup. Wrong answer.

So I deleted the Avant browser, and that didn’t help anything. First, my computer froze again. Then, when I restarted, I still couldn’t connect to the internet. THere was also a popup that showed up that wanted me to sign on to the internet. What the popup was did not show up in my task manager. To say the least, I was getting quite aggravated.

So I went to system restore, and reset my computer back to last night, before I tried to experiment with a new browser. Now, everything is back to normal.

If you take anything away from this, make sure you always set a restore point before installing anything. Always pay attention to negative reviews for software. And don’t use the Avant browser.
