Stumble It!Stirling Energy Systems

Filed under: Science and Technology — Eric Ptak @ 9:41 pm

I was listening to On Point. I usually listen to it every day on my way from work to the gym, unless I’m listening to the Sabres game. It’s a good show, and Tom Ashbrook is a fair and intelligent host. Today, they were talking about the environment, and the meetings in Montreal.

What specifically caught my attention was the interview he had with D. Bruce Osborn, the CEO of Sterling Energy Systems. Essentially, what they have created are solar collectors that look like large satellite dishes. These collectors heat up hydrogen gas in Stirling engines which in turn generate electricity. I think it’s a neat concept for generating electricity with minimal harm to the environment.

I wonder if something like this is possible to have on a small scale, to put on a house. I had an idea like that to make a windmill that’s approximately the size of a satellite dish, which can be mounted on a house to supplement its energy needs, and perhaps feed energy back into the power grid. That’s what we need more of: Green Energy.
