Skinning

Did you ever skin? That is design and or update the way a website looks?

A long time ago, I bought webspace and put up a private forum for my family to use. The software I decided on using was put out by Invision Power Services [1], which I like, because it’s really easy to use, and there’s a lot of support for it out there. Over the years that it’s been up, I’ve added a few skins that others have written, for holidays and for variety. They’re nice, but I never really mucked around much with the inner workings of the skins and the code involved.

Unfortunately, some of the skins I have used are not supported by the people who made them anymore. I understand, you’re in college, you want to put something out there, you have a lot of time on your hands, blah, blah, blah. Then you get a real job, and you don’t have the time you used to have for doing things like creating skins.

So I decided to try to update one of the skins I added with the 2.1.* version of the software to the 2.2.* version. After much coffee, lots of swearing, and bleary eyes from staring at code for ten straight hours and modifying graphics, I finally finished.

What a pain in the ass. I mean really, what a pain in the freaking ass. I thought, maybe a couple of hours at most, so I’d be sone before the Sabres game. Then it went on after the game. Then it went past midnight, and into the morning.

Now that I did it, I’m sure I could do it much faster the next time around, but holy crap, that sucked.
