Computer Maintenance

Posted By Eric Ptak On March 12, 2006 @ 12:06 am In Science and Technology | No Comments

I spent the whole day doing things like spyware checks, virus checks, and all sorts of other maintenance things. Not fun. You see, all of a sudden, I started getting this error message when starting up my computer about a missing “ibm00003.exe” file. I thought it has something to do with some sort of spyware. So I ran Spybot [1], AdAware [2], Webroot [3], Hijack This [4], and System Mechanic [5], to no avail. I found a snippet in my System.ini file referring to that program and just deleted it. Now it seems to be gone.

What I hate is that when I ran Webroot, it found two spyware programs nothing else found. But in order to remove them, you had to spend thirty bucks to buy the software. I suppose they have to make money, but still, that’s pretty wacked. “Hey, you have evilness on your computer, but too bad, we won’t let you get rid of it with the progam you used to find it.” What the hell’s the point of running a program like that if I can’t get rid of the crap it detects?
